Funeral Etiquette

While black is traditional, it's no longer mandatory. The key is to dress respectfully:

• Conservative, modest clothing in muted colors
• Avoid bright colors unless specifically requested
• Smart casual is usually appropriate
• Consider the family's wishes - some request colorful clothing

Keep condolences simple and sincere:

• "I'm sorry for your loss"
• "Thinking of you at this difficult time"
• "She will be greatly missed"
• Share a fond memory if appropriate, always try to talk, not avoiding the situation. Bring along things which may help the family, sometimes cooking food and helping with meals helps more than you think. 
  
  Offer to help with family chores or childminding where possible

Avoid: Asking how they died, saying "I know how you feel", or offering unsolicited advice.

• Arrive on time or slightly early
• Always turn off mobile phones
• Follow the lead of others for standing/sitting
• It's always okay to show emotion
• Sign the book of condolence if present
• Children are usually welcome but consider their age

Check the funeral notice for guidance and you can also speak to the Funeral Director:

• "Family flowers only" means don't send flowers
• Donations often requested for a chosen charity, there may be a donation box at the service or an online charity. QR codes are now used in many places and can link to charity pages or video streaming options.
• If sending flowers, include a simple message
• Sympathy cards can be sent to the family home
