Financial Support Available

There are several benefits available to help with funeral costs and provide financial support after bereavement.

Funeral Expenses Payment

If you qualify for certain benefits, you may be able to get help with funeral costs from the DWP.
The qualifying benefits are Universal Credit, Income Support, Pension Credit, Housing Benefit, Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance, Income-related Employment and Support Allowance. Your award may depend on income and savings.

  • This may mean up to £1,000 towards the funeral expenses
  • The cost of the burial or cremation fees
  • A claim must be made within 6 months of the funeral service
  • This will depend on your relationship to deceased

Bereavement Support Payment

For those whose spouse or civil partner died on or after 6 April 2017.

  • Initial lump sum payment
  • Monthly payments for up to 18 months
  • Not means-tested
  • Must claim within 3 months
